This is what I Believe…

There are defining achievements in all of our lives that make us uniquely excited simply for the fact that we did what was in our hearts to do.  The completion of the new website, the Virtual Field House, and this new 7 Volume C4 Self-Correct System DVD series is a moment like that for me.

I have spent the better part of 20 years thinking about, investing in, and working with over 7,000 quarterbacks at our last count.  I often joke that, “I must have learned something looking at all of those kids.”  I have. 

After significant achievements like these, there is an important opportunity to reflect on those whose influence positioned you to complete your goal.  That is a long list in my heart.  But, I will always be mindful, and grateful, to men like my Father, Steve Slack; my college QB coach, Mike Kruczek; and High School coach, Mike Bisceglia.  The men who held sway over my growth and opportunity as a player, and held me accountable to always work harder than I believed I could.  

I remember them as men who, though not perfectly or without failure, coached me through some of the most difficult seasons of my young athletic life.   I think about JR Bishop and Dick Dullaghan who patiently listened to, and believed in, my different ideas on throwing before anyone else would.  There are many others like these, whose names you will never know, that forged faith and character in me, and stood with me in the many difficult seasons I have had getting to this point.

It is their ember of belief—belief  that it was worth it to invest in a gangly, slow white kid who thought he might have chance—that I have fanned into a raging furnace of passion to tell every single one who will listen, that it wasn’t that I achieved everything I wanted.  It was that I, for one brief moment, got to taste what it was like to chase a dream; and, on some level, see it fulfilled. 

However, I would never tell you that the achievement I gained is my motivation for doing this.  It is not.  For me, it was just having the chance!  It was the idea that someone believed in me enough, to give me a shot!  For both of my coaches, on both levels, I had to overcome many failures to win their favor, but the belief they expressed in me that it was possible was all I needed.  I didn’t need their guarantee, I just wanted the chance.  And I got it.

I look out over the landscape of athletics, and specifically the quarterback culture, and never has the bar been set so high for a young man to compete for the High School job, much less a college scholarship.  You have to be tall, strong, fast, smart, etc.  It really wasn’t all that different in my day, but the difference now is there are a lot more people telling you they can get you where you want to be.  Never have there been more experts that can help a young man achieve his goals.

I believe a primary distinction of the Darin Slack Quarterback Academy is my faith.

The strength of my beliefs determines my level of commitment to see you advance.  Not only do I have a strong faith in God and in my program, but I also believe many other things that directly affect my passion to see you reach your goals… 

I believe that every young man, elite or eleven, deserves my full attention and passion in any context I am training him.  

I believe that it is not only possible but certain that a young man can change his throwing motion with the kind of results that will even leave the young man shaking his head.

I believe that you can invest "heart" into a young man in the form of genuine confidence through honestly communicating, on a more clear and meaningful level, the “Why” of what he must do.

I believe that a young man who plays quarterback is receiving the absolute best training for life as a man—better than any other sport, or position in that sport, can teach him.

I believe that same young man, when he hangs up his helmet, will continue to execute the role and responsibility of a quarterback for the balance of his life in his work, family, and community, as every man does.

That is why…

I believe that in 90 minutes, I can change the way a young man thinks about his career, mechanics, and purpose for life.  So much so, that if that young man is so inclined, he can, in turn, change his entire program in one day.

I believe that a quarterback’s highest achievement is not a college scholarship, or pro contract, or statistic.  It is the testimony of his left guard, right tackle, or running back, who declares that in the face of their most extreme adversity that they found a young man worthy of respect and worth following. 

I believe that beating in the heart of every young man in this country, athlete or not, is the heart of a quarterback just looking for a chance.  They want no guarantees.  They just want someone to tell them what is possible, show them how to achieve it, and then believe in them enough to let them try.

I believe that even if only one quarterback, at one camp, in every place I go hears the call to manhood in his heart and believes that he can make a difference as a result; then it was worth it.  I may not survive financially this way, but by God, there is nothing like it, and I will do it for as long as I can.

I believe it is my responsibility, from a very kind and gracious God who has given me this undeserved gift, to make every effort I can to invest in every young man I can what He has given to me: a passion to believe that it matters if you show up today, that it matters if you give your best effort, and that it matters if you only reach one guy.

I believe it is my calling to assist coaches in developing young men for their programs who remind them how privileged they are to have this much fun doing what they do.

I believe it is my duty to assist parents, in any way I can, in the unspeakable honor of cultivating confidence, consistency, character, and commitment (the backbone of the C4 Self Correct System) in their athlete son.

I believe I must maintain a clear distinction in my coaching.  I am a developer of men, not a recruiter.  I do not evaluate young men only for their potential as next level QBs.  While I have the capacity and am extremely qualified to do so, it is my belief that every young man has potential to make a difference as an athlete, period.   Therefore,  I am doggedly compelled to withhold prejudice and always seek to ignite a fire in every young man I train to pursue, and achieve, whatever innate potential they possess.

I believe that in as much as I am able, I give every opportunity to a young man to show me what he is capable of in the time I am privileged to train him, and therefore, I must be willing to partner with his parents and coach (provided they want me too) for the entire adolescent process, and not just sell them a DVD or get him to a camp.  This is a relationship, not a recruitment.

I believe as a Quarterback trainer, a Christian, a Leader, a Husband, a Father, and a man; that my generation is lost without its young men sensing a call to be what God made them to be, and to seeking the rich reward that only a man knows in giving his life away for something bigger than himself.

This is why I believe the Darin Slack Quarterback Academy is different, and while I know these things won’t appeal to everyone, it is mission critical for me to clearly express my passion to help you achieve what is in your heart for the future.  

Be that as a quarterback, looking for that one shot, and you just need a way to get there… 

Be that as a Father or Mother, looking for a partner and guide to help their athlete son through these tumultuous teenage years… 

Be that as a coach, looking for a coaching colleague and friend who isn’t interested in changing what you do in your program, just the way your players do it for you...

If you’ve read this far, then one of two things has happened: 

You are intrigued by what I have said, and while you haven’t met me, you might be willing to take a chance that at least a portion of what I said is real.

You just can’t believe there is a program or a coach who genuinely believes all these things. 

Either way, you have to find out whether it is true or not.

My mother, is actually the one I owe the most thanks to for where I am.  That is for a lot of reasons, but athletically, when I was number 2 and looking for the reason to keep fighting to get my “shot,” she would quietly ask me, “How bad do you want this?  ‘Cause you talking about it sure isn’t getting it done.”  She was right. 

I need to ask you now,

“How bad do you want what I have talked about?” 

For yourself as a quarterback,

For your son as a parent,

For your quarterback as a coach? 

‘Cause talking about it isn’t getting it done."  

I am not selling you a DVD series.  I have spent over 20 years, and financed over 1,500 man hours producing, and personally editing this DVD System. It's the input I never received, but the quarterback training I desperately needed to, “get my shot.”  

There were experts who could tell me what to do, but there just wasn’t anyone to teach me what I really needed to know to succeed- “Why?”  The old adage, “I wish I knew then, what I know now” couldn’t be more appropriate. 

I have produced 7 final edit hours of the highest detailed training at the easiest level to understand, to make sure that never has to happen again.  The generation I live in will not able to say, there wasn’t somewhere I could go to really learn how to play quarterback.  There wasn’t anyone who understood my challenge of insufficient coaching. 

All of our excuses are silenced. 

All my excuses I made over the years for not doing the upgrade and DVD system, and all of yours for not investing in your future are gone.
